How a freeworking approach lets remote workers achieve the work-life blend that suits them best

11 September 2024 — The Recognition Group embraces a fully remote approach to business that we call freeworking, where we empower our employees to log in from wherever they want or need to, for the best possible work-life balance.

This means working from cafes or local libraries for a change of scenery for many of our team members. For others, it means making a sea change and escaping a cold local winter for the Bali sunshine, taking advantage of the digital nomad experience.

Armed with her laptop, mouse, noise cancelling headphones, digital notepad, portable monitor, and more, account manager Amy set off for Bali’s warmer weather and the opportunity to explore new cultural experiences without sacrificing her day job or putting her career on hold. Amy spent six months in Bali, only returning when the weather warmed up in her native Adelaide.

Graphic designer Monique, likewise, took the opportunity to spend three weeks working from Bali during the Australian winter. She tacked on some annual leave at the end of the trip to ensure she also had a holiday and could see everything she wanted to.

Both Amy and Monique have taken advantage of early starts, aligning their workdays in Bali with Sydney time zones, to ensure they can still put in a full day supporting clients while also enjoying an afternoon exploring the sights of Bali.

Amy Silver said, “The time zone change works to your advantage in Bali. Starting at 7:30am local time means you can finish at 3:00 pm and still enjoy cultural experiences. It also gives me the opportunity to engage with other professionals throughout Bali, including other digital nomads, which I found helped to keep me accountable, in coworking spaces. I’ve truly been able to live every company value during this experience.

“My entire office fits inside a laptop bag, which means that, even though I’m working in Bali, I have essentially the same office setup as I would have at home, and I can take it with me to brand new locations every day, including collaborative workspaces throughout Bali. I’m fortunate to work for a company that encourages us to have these experiences and make the most of our lives without needing to pause our careers.”

Monique Prommersberger said, “I feel privileged to be able to see and do so many things while still working, earning, and progressing my career. I had a massive list of things to see and do and I still ticked everything off, even though I only had a short time in Bali. It gave me another way to enjoy and experience the Balinese culture, living and working in another country instead of seeing only the tourist hotspots. I could continue to support my team and service clients, despite being in a different location and time zone.”

The benefit of freeworking lets our team members continue to provide exceptional service to clients while enjoying new and exciting experiences, and even travelling the world, without using their annual leave all at once.
