Making the most of working remotely all the way from Europe

26 September 2024 — Despite being thousands of miles away from his home office in Brisbane, Glenn, our head of finance, enjoyed a balance of work and family life while exploring Europe. His decision to work remotely from the other side of the world was driven by a combination of factors. Motivated to extend his holiday and make the most of his time abroad, Glenn also saw an opportunity to stay connected with work, which helped him ensure everything would continue to run smoothly.

Glenn’s European adventure started in England, where he spent two weeks with his family, working half-days in the mornings. This let him handle urgent matters and essential tasks, such as invoicing and financial reporting, while ensuring he was available during Australian working hours.

The next leg of his journey took him to Germany, where the scenic beauty of the Alps awaited. Here, Glenn managed to find a sweet spot between his work commitments and leisure time before making his way to the home of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

During his time in France, Glenn consciously decided to unplug from work. This break let him recharge and fully immerse himself in French culture, savouring the food, wine, and relaxation without work interruptions.

Returning to Germany, Glenn increased his work hours to catch up on pending tasks. He acknowledged the ebbs and flows in his workload and adapted accordingly. It was a reminder that, while remote work offers flexibility, it also requires adaptation and a willingness to adjust workloads as needed.

Glenn Badke said, “Working from different parts of Europe was an enlightening experience. When I was in England, I managed to get urgent work done in the mornings, which was perfect because it matched with the working hours back in Australia. This meant I could spend the afternoons hanging out with my family, making the most of our time together. Over in Germany, I stuck to a similar plan: work in the mornings and then off for some fun with the family in the afternoons.”

Glenn and his family chose to stop in Singapore before heading back to Australia. This layover was a chance to unwind and prepare for the return to their regular routines.

Glenn Badke said, “This whole experience has really opened my eyes to how great working while travelling can be. It’s helped me stay on top of my work and, at the same time, provided a balanced lifestyle for both my family and me.”
